You place these films into your own personal “queue” and they then mail you the first three available films from the top of your queue. You receive the DVDs in the mail in a special red envelope, which is also a prepaid return envelope which you just drop in any mailbox. You watch the movies at your leisure. There are no late fees. When Netflix receives the returned movies at one of their numerous distribution centers around the country, they will send you the next movie or movies from the top of your queue. It is that easy. If a movie happens to be lost in the mail when you return it, or you never receive it (these things happen) you will not be charged for it and a new movie will be sent out to you.

Streaming movies were added to the site a few years after the service started. It works the same as your rentals. You choose from a giant inventory of movies and you can watch them instantly on your computer or television as streaming movies. Scary New Movies that have Been Released in the Past Year

Nothing beats the feeling of being scared half to death by a fantastically freaky horror picture, especially at the theater surrounded by more freaked out moviegoers. Why is it that we love being frightened? Our hearts race and our pulse quickens and the hair on the back of our heads stands up as the ghoul jumps out from behind our hero. We jump straight up almost out of our chairs when that scary moment comes. Alas, great scary new movies have been hard to come by. Most of the junk that comes out of Hollywood could not frighten a heart transplant patient much less the typical jaded horror movie fan.

In 2009 one movie did come out that struck a nerve with audiences around the world and that was “Paranormal Activity”. This shocker, which cost very little to make and was mostly shot on high definition video has grossed over $110,000,000 in U.S. box office to date. It just came out on DVD and Blu-Ray and will probably gross another $50 million there in 2010.

“Paranormal Activity” was directed by first timer Oren Peli, who spent a mere $15 million to get his movie in the can. Starring newbies Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat as a suburban yuppie couple from San Diego that are being terrorized by a demon ghost from hell, this movie starts out pretty slow but builds up to an unforgettably chilling climax. I saw this film at the theaters with a packed house and everyone jumped out of their seat gasping in terror every few minutes or so, especially near the end. Scary new movies just don’t get much better than this and this particular movie not only did well with audiences but with critics alike. If you have not seen it you are missing out.

Another of the new scary movies that came out early in 2009 was “Antichrist” and it was a stark contrast to “Paranormal Activity” especially considering all of the hype it received before it opened. The trailers had it pegged as the new “Exorcist” and boy were they dead wrong. Made by Danish film maker Lars Von Triers and starring Willem DaFoe and Charlotte Gainsbourgh as a couple that have recently lost their toddler son in a home accident, the film is more of a psychosexual character study and a depiction of a fever dream than any kind of horror story. The problem with this movie is not the movie itself. It is what it is, some sort of art piece with over the top bloodletting and gruesomeness. No, the main problem is how this movie was falsely advertised to the movie going public as one of the scary new movies of the year along the lines of “The Grunge” or “The Ring”, neither of which it even remotely resembles.

You need to pay close attention to any claims by studios of scary new movies that are opening soon. One of the freakiest looking of any of the scary new movies coming out soon is “The Black Waters at Echo’s Pond”. Watch the trailer online and make up your own mind.

Movies that will leave you guessing to the end

If you are like me when it comes to movies, then we are on the same plane when I say that I rate the best suspense movies on the plot and how the suspense is developed throughout the movie rather than having single designated points of suspense. Most movies are easy to figure out who done this or where the entire plot is headed, but if a movie can conceal this feature of the movie, then it deserves to be rated at the top of my list.

One of the best suspense movies that distinguishes itself in this regard is the suspense movie “Sev7en”. Starring the famous Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, the movie is about 2 city cops who go on a quest to track down a serial killer who uses the 7 deadly sins on his victims. The film begins in an investigation that involves a man who eats himself to death. While the audience is already aware the unfolding events will represent the 7 deadly sins in some way, no one is prepared for the climactic finale that will leave all awestruck.

Have you ever rooted for the good guy and the bad guy in a movie? Then “Silence of the Lambs” starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins will have you doing just that. Jodie, a rookie FBI agent, with the help of a locked-up serial killer played by Hopkins investigates the killing and skinning of women by a serial killer called Buffalo Bill. This movie is hard to place, horror or drama, but whatever the case, the suspense in the movie is up there.

Talk about a flawless movie and “The Usual Suspects” comes to mind. The story is told of a crippled man who is the only survivor of a criminal group all killed while on a final job together with the search known only as Keyser Soze. The suspense is so deep that it was said that even after filming, even the actors were did not know who the real Keyser Soze was. Talk about suspense “behind the scenes”.

The “fight Club” is another Brad Pitt movie that I like to rate as suspenseful. Brad and Edward Norton start a fight club where guys get together and vent out frustrations by fighting. As the club grows, it takes the entire nation by storm and what follows next is purely suspense. These suspense movies will have you glued to your seat and scratching your head for answers.

Documentary movies and the new millennium

The oughties - the decade that spanned from the year two thousand to the year two thousand and nine - has been called many things. It's been called "The Deade from Hell." It's been called "The Third Awakening." It's been called a period of American history best left forgotten.

But I'm calling it something else entirely. I'm calling it the decade of documentary movies.

You see, I'm a bit of a film buff. From the very first movies filmed by Thomas Edison 120 years ago to whatever the great silent films of Griffith, Murnau and the like, to Citizen Kane to Lawrence of Arabia to modern hits like The Departed and No Country for Old Men... if it's been on celluloid, I've probably seen it. And if I've seen it, I very, very likely have an opinion on it.

So it goes for this decade as well. The 1950s may have been the decade of film musicals. The 1990s were the decade of indipendent films, while the 1970s were the era of either high-flung science fiction (Tarkovsky's "Solaris", Lucas's "Star Wars", Scott's "Alien") or gritty realism (Coppola's "The Godfather" both I and II, Scorsese's "Mean Streets" and "Taxi Driver", and anything from Cassavettes or Peckinpah come to mind). This past decade, however, saw more quality documentary movies made than any other decade, and any other genre.

The biggest, in terms of budget, fanfare and impact, was Michael Moore's anti-Bush screed "Fahrenheit 9-11." Moore, whatever you think of his politics, is an immensely gifted filmmaker who is able to construct his stories in a way that delivers the maximum possible effect for time spent.

Other documentary movies of the decade that deserve the highest of high praise are Stacy Peralta's surfing doc, "Riding Giants," and a little-known film by director Seth Gordon about two men vying to set the high score in Donkey Kong called "The King of Kong: A fistful of Quarters."

While those may have set the artistic standard for documentary movies over the past ten years, it's worth noting that the financial standard was set by Moore. "Fahrenheit 9-11" made nearly one hundred twenty million dollars at the box office - completely mind-blowing for a documentary and more than fifty percent higher than its nearest competition. In additon to 2004's Fahrenheit 9-11, he also made "Sicko" in 2007. This documentary movies about the united states health insurance industry made 24.5 million dollars and is the seventeenth highest grossing documentary of all time in its own right.

Oscar nominated movies over the years

Oscar nominated movies are supposed to be the cream of the crop, the best films of the year. Too often, however, oscar nominated movies fall short of that mark and are predictably lumped into the best marketed films of the year. Or the most banal films of the year that have the most connected producers.

The Academy has been giving out Oscar nominations for over seventy years now, and the process of making the nominations has, in itself, become big business. Because business mixes into the process, then, you can be sure that oscar nominated movies aren't always going to be the best ones, but rather the ones with the most people in high places pushing for its consideration.

The history of The Academy - Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which oversees oscar nominated movies - goes back to 1929. Since then oscar nominated movies have gained both audience and prestige from the Academy's work, and that continues to this day.

The Academy was originally started by Louis B. Mayer, legendary head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, as a way to settle labor disputes. He also intended the academy to improve the image of the industry, and as a result came up with an awards show with a banquet. What was to come would eventually be the biggest night of stars seen anywhere in the world.

The original Oscar nominated movies from taht first year were Wings, by William Wellman, which was the eventual winner, The Racket by Lewis Mileston, and 7th Heaven by Frank Borzage. Wings is better rememberd today for being the film that launched Gary Cooper's career than any other profound effect it had on the industry, though Wellman is considered by many to be one of the finest directors of the silent era.

Until 1940 oscar nominated movies were nominated for "Best Production." At that point the award was changed to "Best Picture." There were also many more oscar nominated movies, with as many as 10 getting noms before the academy put a limit of five oscar nominated movies in any year starting in 1944.

Some of the most award-winning movies, though, haven't aged that well. For every "The Best Years of Our Lives," there's been a "The Greatest Show on Earth." For every "Casablanca" there's been a "Marty", and for every "Bridge on the River Kwai" there's been a "Ben-hur." So the Academy, while enduring, is nothing if not mistake-prone.
